Carbon Records is one of the more adventurous resources for homemade experimental music based in the U.S. This label / distribution outfit always has some interesting offerings, often international releases that can't be found anywhere else but direct from the artist. This saves the American consumer the hassle of converting dollars to euros and whatnot, and gets that Macedonian lathe-cut vinyl in your mailbox within a couple of days. - Heathen Harvest

Title: Reticent to Manifest
Format: CASS
Label: Abandon Ship (USA)
Price: $6.00
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ASR001
"Reticent to Manifest was made on a cold summer's night in Los Angeles... High on salsa verde and the thick brown air, three men went in and one long string of sound came out. (VxPxC) has been known for pulling some legs and some hair in the past, but this tape is the start of a very long apology of sorts... a way to say "Hey, we like music too... maybe just not the same stuff as you, but you know..." Not a particularly heart-felt apology, mind you, but a start... "

"New stunning disk from this shining new-ish LA trio. Like few others, they manage to dig deep into the big psych vibe while keeping their pants on... No copycatsists they bring their own treats to the psychedelic breakfast.. ehh, enough half-ass blabber, these boys mix psych, drone, rock and noise in a way few other does these days.. Kinda like the record you never found but always were looking for at the jumble sales... Edition of 70"

"From the musical collective broadcasting Terracid, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, and other celestial craziness comes the majikal sounds of 6Majik9. Channelling Coltrane through a cracked mirror image of the No-Neck Blues Band, the music of "Rubber God Head' is a new form of world music, a world of not just distance and space, but of time and past and future. Artist: A Jarvis
Title: The Widow Myth
Format: 3inch CDR
Label: First Person (UK)
Price: $6.00 $3.72 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_Singuler028
""This four track 3" CD-R feels more like a career sampler than just the latest mind food parcel from Andy Jarvis. From the opening tracks manic caterpillar pulse and warm salt-water drone, Jarvis slams dunks into "I Defend a Wet Body"s Chris Corsano vs. Mike Tyson percussion punch up. Drones in coiling slow motion fill out the following "Sing in Duet with Transparent Time" with a much subtler organ feel. The best is saved for last though, with an electrostatic octopus of light and sound clash that lashes through the receptive mushy bits of the brain. Perfect. (Scott McKeating]"

"10 embryonic recordings from 1996-99. Previously released in 2001 by Fencing Flatworm Recordings (RIP) --- – “Tiny tracks with a very large impact. Wonderfully crafted, built with strings and drones. Emotionaly spellbinding music that leaves you captivated” ... “This zine is in danger of becoming an FFR/oTo sycophanticidal offshoot but what the fuck do I care? When the sounds on offer are as good as this its just a matter of putting the thing in the damned slot and sitting back to admire the scenery. Going down the same street as last issues Finnish outing from Kemialliset Ystavat this little darling of a twenty one minute CD is enough to bring tears to the eyes of a weary Wire reviewer who thought that only really great music came from people who already had back catalogues as long as your serpent. Wake up and smell the fumes you dum fucks. Each track (there's ten) holds together like an unfeasibly fragile accomplishment that settles nervously on punters force fed jingles and drum and bass backing for ad verts to Dixon cars and this weeks Cosmopolitan. The gentle multilayered strum of an old acoustic guitar that is 'twine' could be a drugged up sixty year old Nick Drake fucking about for something to do on a windy Sunday afternoon with four strings left on his trusty old box. 'mikul's' slim guitar pluck edging out of the interwaves of a radio station like Roy Harper in a dope haze had me falling off my chair in amazimundo. One of those rare CDs that I never tire of listening to”: (from Just Glittering 8)"

Title: Orla
Format: CD
Label: Ikuisuus (Finland)
Price: $15.00
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_IKU_AMCD
One day in early 2004 I arrived home to find the biggest parcel I had ever received sitting on my doorstep, it was crudely wrapped and covered in stamps. I was amazed that anyone would POST something like this through the regular mail system. I brought it inside and cut away the packaging. To my astonishment I found that it contained a large old 'Orla' chord organ and a letter from Marcel Bear (Empirical) saying that he had noted my recent enthusiasm for organ tones (see also With Throats As Fine As Needles and Sunken...). He had found this one at a garage sale and thought that I might like it. My interest in organs had been at least in part inspired by my reading about Charlemagne Palestine and his concept of the "Golden Music". His idea of a stream of sound that may facilitate an ecstatic bliss of religious intensity has been hugely influential to me (in much the same way as Haino's 'sound of the universe'...). I decided pretty much straight away that I would record an album using this organ as the predominant sound source (the only other sound sources are the field recordings of rain on the 1st track and scaffolding pipes on the 2nd). As the recordings progressed from the straight ahead drone of the 1st track I stripped away more and more unnecessary components of the machine until on the last track I was bowing and plucking the spring pegs of the keys. One of my favourite sounds was that of the fan motor itself.

Artist: Aaron Dilloway
Title: Beggar Master
Format: CD
Label: Hanson Records (USA)
Price: $12.00 $7.44 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_HN132CD
CD issue of first full-length LP by ex-Wolf Eyes member Aaron Dilloway. Recorded in Kirtipur, Nepal, March 2005. Originally released on LP limited to 300 copies. Tape manipulations, feedback, crude field recordings, & Nepali dirt. "Side 'Beggar Master' is like a video game of a brick wall chasing a 300 pound wobble legged mosquito. High feedback intercepted by sliding horizontal pile of bricks. Beating thud heart with some open holes in the side corresponding to sludge lake bug liberation. Pumping muscle disorders team up with mud and dirt bubble bath to make larvae spawn engine. Whir and blur background mechanical swamp. The end of the 'Beggar' side cuts off immediately just as you think the whole mess of introduced sound is going to rise up and start knocking down buildings. You can hear the displaced air of the kong leg lifting and zip! The 'Prayer Flush' side starts off as a homage to prehistoric Raptors vs. the Soccer Thugs of Britain. Whistles, bites on the ass, distorted knee scrapes highlight various parts of the first few mins of screaming melee. This fades into some drawn out electro fry. The sound that no living being can stand up to: deep long forked tongue death. Hum of the end. Then the New Blockaders on the Thalid-O-Kid interrupt to make a canal of tumbling pile of canned garbage flowing into a heightened snow storm of singing trident lava-needled record players. Welcome here all trashit, submit your excessive horrible souls to our torture disparagement! If you listen close enough you might be able to hear the behemoth garbage truck rolling up everything into a black hole rear compartment. Background Killoway with his garbage can lid crook pointing the way into vortex nothing. Canned fuzz drops dead after the tidal bleach hand eliminates all movement. If you've heard it all from the Christians how scary the sounds of hell will be, you can hear from Killoway's field recording how your garbage is being treated once it's putrid soul is released. Definitely a mood soundtrack for oblivionic conoise-suers with plans to ride the flume to hell." -- Bonnie Banks, Brutal Sound Effects.

Artist: Aaron Moore
Title: The Accidental
Format: CD
Label: Elsie and Jack
Price: $13.00
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_eaj017sl
"as a founding member of the english experimental group volcano the bear, aaron moore has been a part of creating some of the most stimulating and diverse music of the last 10 years with releases on nurse with wound’s united dairies label, and the american label, beta-lactam ring records, to name but two. ‘the accidental’ is moore’s first solo release and is in stark contrast to his drumming and vocal work with volcano the bear. using such instrumentation as bowed and beaten vibraphone, cymbal, chord organ, thumb piano and keyboard, mainly concentrating with one instrument per track, moore has created an album of mesmerizing beauty. shifting, woozy soundscapes, blurred drones, soft conjuring, and deep meditations - perfect for late night headphone trips. on ‘three guineas’, a keyboard is used to create a new lullaby in which we are reminded of years past. the majority of these recordings, made at his home in leicester on a digital 8 track and one microphone in 2003 were intended for an aborted collaboration with oren ambarchi. they then sat on his machine for a year or so until, with the nagging of friends, he set about doing something with them. some of the tracks, he felt, needed the hand of another so he sent some tracks to friends andrew liles, luke fowler and alex neilson to collaborate on. they in turn sent the finished tracks back to moore where he set about editing them for inclusion on ‘the accidental’. the title, ‘the accidental’ comes from the fact that were it not for the original aborted collaboration attempt with ambarchi, moore would not have recorded this music. moore is continuing his work with volcano the bear and his new duo, dragon or emperor, as well as planning several collaborations in the coming months. if a follow up to ‘the accidental’ is to happen, then maybe it will be on purpose next time?!"

Artist: Agents at Midnight
Title: s/t
Format: CD
Label: Quodlibet (USA)
Price: $10.00 $6.20 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_QLCD004
"The full-length debut of noise-jazz duo Agents At Midnight, and a real pro-pressed CD in an edition of 500 copies, the first in 5 years! Meticulously constructed from hours and hours of recording sessions, this album is a distillation of all the many sounds and styles explored by this duo. Rumbling bassy drones, unflinchingly ear-piercing examinations of feedback tones, dizzyingly fast sample-based pieces, musique concrete-inspired collage. And on all of it, sax and electronics flow subtly into one another, bleeding over until the authorship of sounds is often uncertain. Agents At Midnight inhabits a weird hybrid territory somewhere between abstract modern improv, harsh noise, and free jazz, sometimes blending these styles, sometimes veering between them." - limited to 500, co-released with Fargone

Title: Mini Movies
Format: 2CD
Label: Asphodel (USA)
Price: $17.00 $10.54 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ASPH3004CD
Two-disc release, one CD/one DVD. "The Compact Disc: Loping, wine-soaked electrical RnB, AGF's third album (her first for Asphodel) finds her dropping neu beat poetry over cookie crumb beats and snaking across sly bass and piano. Tales of friendship, longing, and wandering through anonymous city streets permeate the airwaves. Nineteen tracks of lopsided pop and soundtrack interludes, sparse and torch lit, Mini Movies is the complete sound of disastrous freedom. The DVD: the Mini Movie: Sue C. (Gold Chains collaborator and solo video artist in her own right) and AGF worked together to put together this patchwork mystery of everyday life in the shadows of capitalism, socialism, communalism and community. It is about personal history and personal relationships. Filmed in New York, Long Island, Berlin, London, San Francisco and elsewhere, Mini Movie is a travel diary at once familiar and strange but overall it is a tribute to friendship. The soundtrack is one continuous piece from which most of the tracks on the CD were derived."

Label: Audiobot (Belgium)
Price: $12.00 $7.44 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_BOT161
"Alfredo Costa Monteiro has been challenging the borders of improvised music since '95, exploring visual arts, visual poetry and sound. His radical use of minimal objects blew a weird hole in my mind when he performed in the FeF store a few weeks back, scraping the accordion surface with dense flames in the eyes. He has peformed with a seemingly endless list of players such as Peter Kowald, Mattin, Margarida Garcia, Mark Wastell, Giuseppe Ielasi, Ernesto Rodrigues, Masahiko Okura, ... If that summary didn't wet your appetite, his sound has been released on international labels as Antifrost, Creative Sources, Rossbin, A Bruit Secret, Hibari and Sound 323. Packaged in double sided fold-out covers, by Edward Maddison in an edition of only 110 copies. File under = twisted elbows and unpredictable behaviour."

Algebrassiere is a seven-armed gilamonster, hairy everywhere except on it's chest, eight cat heads sprouting from it's spine. As it lumbers through the plasma center, it batters upon musical instruments with the severed limbs of Randy Savage. It lives to lick the flames of fire and spew stream-of-consciousnesses into a coffee can that doubles as a toilet. It longs for love, but will settle for a crooked, gap-filled smile from a whiskeystench bum. This album raises a racket that swings, 12 trax of impromptou fiendrocking fuck rock that makes you more virile with each successive listen. Spraypainted, screened, colorcopied that shit

Label: Public Guilt (USA)
Price: $5.00 $3.10 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_IS003
"Aluk Todolo (France) plays Occult Rock. The band uses traditional rock instruments and magickal theories to reach elevated levels of psychedelic trance and new states of consciousness. This 7" marks their debut debut and features two esoteric compositions that are drawn from the bands improv-laden, live rituals. Side A is a rhythmic and moody piece which gradually builds intensity only to crescendo and gently drift into a blur of sound and mysterious mumblings from Aleister Crowley. The B-side is more krautrock-influenced and upbeat, but fades into an ethereal drone only to explode back into a heavy rock jam. Aluk Todolo features members from the legendary, underground black metal acts, Diamatregon (tUMULt) & Vediog Svaor (Paragon International)."

Title: The End of this Short Road
Format: CD
Label: Deserted Village (UK)
Price: $14.00 $8.68 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_DV27
"I recorded it in 2000 a few months before I started the PseudoArcana label, and given that my initial idea for P.A. was for it to focus on harsher and more abstract musics the simple melodic folk songiness of 'Short Road' resulted in it sitting on the shelf for much longer than it perhaps should have. There was a great poet who said of his work that all he had ever done was write the same poem again and again, trying to get it right. I've sometimes felt that I only have the one song inside me, and I've approached that song from a hundred radically different angles and have ultimately become convinced that this song can never in fact be realised in any definitive way. But that one song is still there inside me and there are places on 'Short Road' where I think I come as close to realising that song as anywhere."

Side A: “Tarantula Downpour Glass of Wine for Dinner” is based on an all too realistic dream about post-modern identity drowning itself in lack of confidence. It’s also about mind-control through chemical warfare by both force and volunteer. What if the apocalypse has already come and gone and this is just us trying to make sense of the end times? Side B: “Lend Me your Blanket (I Wanna Dream About You)” is a love song to James’s dead mother. She rests inside his voice and Argumentix feels her spirit when he sings. Of course, she would have also thought this music was really strange. DVDR includes 8 original animated videos by James Squeaky, including a video for “Tarantula Downpour,” along with songs from various other releases. They range from crude drawings and feline adventures to dense rotating patterns of melting color."

"Music journalists by day, musical story-tellers by night, writer Adam Gnade likes to put his words to music and Boss of Goth, Argumentix likes to put music to words. For a night the two loaded up on ecstatic narratives and wrangled together this album, a swirling evil spirits hijacking the amusement park journey. But this isn't soundtrack music. There are beats, melodramatic interludes and crushing gasps for air. This is two story-tellers sharing war stories and raising their fists to the youth. This is something to drink to. This is something to dance to. This is something to die to. Here's to hoping you die before we do. Cover art by Adam, beautifully screenprinted by Ben at Diesel Fuel Prints."

"psychedelic noise devil incantations. pre-industrial voodoo music. C-30 packaged in golden handmade cardboard box. limited to 50 copies." -- REVIEW: Side One – Anatomy of hell - A typewriter forces voodoo pins into glass. Corpse shadows rise up, soil dripping off their bony shoulders, swaying robes, carrying plastic bags full of metal. A chorus of tongue-less moans drift like heavy toxin, as the contents of the bags are tipped into the jaws of an ever hungry typewriter spitting sparks of gluttony. This rain of motorized limbs twitch and scrape the horizon, making shapes - a haunted geometry of dying spasms. Head-butted guitars to the kzzzzzz of cymbal, behind every vocorded deflation crashes more mechanical debris as animal heads float on a carpet of lice. Gnarling electrics creep though the undergrowth like wire brambles, knotted petals that rot under their own weight. Side two – Beyond Hypothermia - is a broken beatbox, its batteries leaking into guitar string claws and giddy disorientation. Drill piano death and dented wood, vocals drowned in creamy scorch. Wire-wool tea cosy of illegible keyboard and rotting reverbed gloom. My skin creeps in a tide-like motion to the carnage, all those textures jostling for attention, making new sensation, awaking perspectives. Fuck this is a gloriously strangled tune. Never heard of Arklight before but that mix of Robedoor(esque) texture and murky experimentation is a winner with me. Pushing doom metal beyond the one chord reverb, all wrapped up in a suitably tainted gold slipcase that is marred by slug trail scribble. - Rottenmeats -

"Mmmm my mouth is watering at the prospect of listening to this with one look at the various underground luminaries involved: Ben Reynolds, Pete Nolan, Andy Jarvis, Alex Neilson, Chris Hladowski (Nalle / Scatter), Mel Delaney and of course Phil Todd. Do I really need to write anymore?! The album opens with its only raga, an acoustic duet from Reynolds and Jarvis, heavily warped by analogue delay. "Hey Sunflower Motherfucker" has Todd's sun-seeking guitar working its way through thick waves of wow. "The Pete Nolan Effect" is a deep pool of drone (once the microphone returns from its wind-blasted trip outside!) as is the immensely atmospheric final track which sounds like the inners of a dank, dark cave." - Boa Melody Ba

Month two of Met Life unveils the first stateside release by the psychedelic electronic duo, AU. Based in Holland, multimedia artists Jan Borchers and Paul Klaui naturally bring us into the soundworld of the Hague by doing what most everybody there does - ride their bikes. AU recorded their tour through the city, capturing everything from the squeaky sound of old bicycle seats to the sudden intrusion of a street parade. The result is a fun panoramic earshot of the city‘s life imilar in effect to Richard Lerman‘s great Travelon Gamelon . AU‘s musical response is a subdued, loose piece incorporating elements of the field recording, analogue electronics and reverberating guitars that recall the efforts of German Krautrock bands like Cluster or a mellowed-out Faust.

"Texas hypno-noise rock outfit Autodidact has been exploring the boundaries of guitar sound since January of 1995. The product of one man and a massed army of guitars forced through miles of effects, Autodidact's sonic roots are in the stacked guitar drones of the Band of Susans, the harmonic thunder of Breaking Circus, the subterranean noise terrain of Pain Teens and Skullflower, and the varied textures of Swans in all their guises. The result on this first CD (after years of cassette-only releases) is a series of hypnotic, minimalist/maximalist songs of a highly trancelike nature. All but one of the songs on this debut CD were originally recorded in far different form on early cassette releases. The exception is the CD's last track, The Face Behind The Shutters, which is coincidentally the album's only song with vocals. The songs themselves are varied -- from the skull-caving subsonic noise rumble of The Seduction Of Jet Girl to the melodic chiming bell-tones of Romance In The Fallout Shelter, Autodidact covers plenty of eerie ground on this release without ever abandoning its instantly identifiable sound. Slow-motion beats battle mutated riffs and white noise from an army of overdriven guitars. Vast, dense, repetitive. Pummeling drone hypno-rock sludge that references skullflower's mindmelting skree, but with a mutated pop soul."

"8 tracks. Limited to 200 copies. The latest (released June 2004) full length from Texan dronerock/disharmonic sludge pop project AUTODIDACT. Waves of chiming discordant guitars and spare glacial beats surge beneath barely-concealed melodies and noisy pop hooks. The BAND OF SUSANS influence is strong here, as if that band reformed in a hot basement somewhere down south, trying to rewrite PIXIES tunes with a battered, beersoaked drum machine on loan from GODFLESH and cough-syrup drenched vocals moaning/croaking bizarre atonal proclamations. Completely fucked up and really catchy."

Once they played noise music… Then Unique Records released their first critically acclaimed album… Baka have never stopped ever since experimenting, making and unmaking sounds. Dealing with Baka can’t go without evoking their astonishing prolixity - many different projects (Tomek and Gasp by Franck Lafay, Imagho, Frz+Imagho, Sketches of Pain by JL Prades) and above all many live improvisations, where all fields of experiments are tackled: drones, guitars, Electro-acoustic manipulations, guitar feedback... etc. Ephémère was born through all this searching. Several live sessions and improvisations were linked, mixed and edited from various stereo tracks. The result is one 40-minute track. The different layers go on dephasing themselves, while acoustic flows roll through the stereo so as to question our own perception. Baka plays with time and space, creates powerful amounts of energy and finally finds light again thanks to crystal-clear arpeggios. The melodies mix themselves, the arpeggios flow together before being in the end melt into organised chaos. We urge you to listening to this new record, this invitation to a trip, both through noise and yourself.

Title: Batholith
Format: LP
Label: three lobed
Price: $20.00
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_TLR043
"released early march 2008. batholith is a collection of six tracks that are near and dear to bardo pond but, for some reason or another, have never previously been released. that one-sentence description might lead one to think that these tracks are "outtakes" or cutting-room floor type material - neither conclusion could be further from the truth. the tracks included on batholith range from previous live staples ("a tune," one made 'famous' by opening bardo's set at terrastock II in san francisco as joined by roy montgomery [and a recording of which was featured on the KFJC compilation live from the devil's triangle, volume 2]) to tracks the band recorded in john peel sessions ("slip away", also available here as a downloadable .mp3 preview). collected as a whole, these tracks form a fluid and cohesive album. batholith is not just an exciting moment for long time bardo pond fans, but a great jumping on point for folks who are relatively new to their craft. as per the three lobed standard, batholith is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl. it is housed within heavy "old-style" one-pocket stoughton gatefold jackets bearing new artwork by john gibbons and isobel sollenberger. the record is from an edition of 1049 copies and, and as an added convenience for our vinyl friends, will come packaged with a glass-mastered CD (not CD-R) of the material present on the wax. pre-ordered copies were accompanied by a bonus CD (TLR-044) of previously unreleased bardo pond material."

Title: Ticket Crystals
Format: CD
Label: ATP Recordings (UK)
Price: $14.00 $8.68 (38% sale)
Catalog ID: CarbonDist_ATPR021
" Philadelphia's Bardo Pond return in June 2006 with Ticket Crystals -- their sixth studio album and second for ATP Recordings. Completing a trilogy of work -- first embarked on with 2001's Dilate and centered with 2003's On the Ellipse -- Ticket Crystals resumes the quintet's signature doom tempo, multi-layered drones; while introducing a lighter pastoral, even Tudor-like feel, which rallies throughout against the band's youthful riff petulance. Recorded over two years at the band's home studio, a handful of the tracks first came to light on Bardo Pond's 2003 live UK dates alongside kindred spirits and former label mates, Mogwai. Tracking down the elusive balance between extensive improvisation and acutely structured arrangements, Ticket Crystals includes the spellbinding "Moonshine" (a ten-minute plus ethereal expedition that immediately recalls the acoustic intricacy of Led Zeppelin III coupled with the contemporary quirkiness of Cocorosie) and live favorite and album opener, "Destroying Angel," which only just manages to contain the sheer force of the brothers Gibbons' amplification and vocalist and flautist Isobel Sollenberger's haunting and occasionally terrifying tones. Also featured on the album is the band's unique reworking of The Beatles' White Album classic, "Cry Baby Cry," which was originally recorded for and broadcast by the BBC as part of their commemoration of the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death."

Catalog ID: CarbonDist_YF001
"Conceived in a thick haze of flatulence and other suspicious airborne activity in 1996, Blatant Crap Taste is the one-man grind machine from Rochester, NY native and technical metal juggernaut, Erik "pinchmaster" Burke. Formerly the creative mastermind behind legendary underground sensations LETHARGY, and current SULACO and NUCLEAR ASSAULT guitarist, the multi-talented Burke handles all the instruments on this 77-song squealography that would literally suck the Tin Man right through a keyhole. Sustained, explosive bursts of humorous intensity is the prime agenda of B.C.T., and via Burke's construction of labyrinth-like mazes of crooked riffing and torrential blast beats, he yanks and twists the listener through a schizophrenic 64 minute minefield of unpredictable aural acupuncture. Despite the prickly nature of the hyper-kinetic, porcupine-needle guitar style, there is an absolute punchdrunk magnetism and sense of groove in the songwriting that slithers and winds itself into your permanent memory. The Life & Times of Steven Character is an essential release for fans of quirky, rhythmically complex extreme metal of the Human Remains/Cephalic Carnage variety, and is truly a testament to the immense talent and staggering creativity of the original Rochester berserker, Erik Burke. Guaranteed to unfold your brain into shrapnel-shaped pieces of THC-stained origa" -- Drew Johnstone
